Copywriter

What outside activities do you do that inform your work life + abilities?

I’ve published two poetry collections and have a third coming out in 2018 (I Think I’m Ready to See Frank Ocean, Saturnalia Books). Next month, I’ll be performing my work for the Culture Series at W+K and, during Litcrawl, at Tender Loving Empire. I currently teach a class on writing accountability for Literary Arts (Challenge Yourself to Write) and will teach a few workshops representing their organization during Wordstock.

How do you feel it helps or influences your work?

Content is all about saying the largest things with the least amount of language. My 6-10 teaches me a lot about language and how to translate it to different audiences.

What outside activities do you do that inform your work life + abilities?

My husband and I try to get out on hikes a couple times a month and backpacking a few times a summer. On these trips my favorite thing to do is take landscape photos and completely unplug from the world. Fresh air + nature = 🙂

How do you feel it helps or influences your work?

Being in nature helps me put everything perspective. I might be stressing about something small but in comparison it really isn’t that big a deal. All that fresh air and really focusing on the beautiful surroundings through photography helps me clear my mind and reset.

What outside activities do you do that inform your work life + abilities?

I create illustrations and poster designs for a local film group, for a friend’s screen printing outfit, and for my own expression. Expression might be stretching it. Let’s say amusement.

How do you feel it helps or influences your work?

It helps to keep advancing my tablet skills and process. True to other “professional work,” quick time frames force quick decisions. I try to lay down digital ink the same way I would on paper; mistakes and imperfections become part of the process.

I also really enjoy radical color theory—high contrast, split complementary schemes, and garish tones. That sensibility helps in establishing clear and compelling color stories in client work.

What outside activities do you do that inform your work life + abilities?

I spend a lot of time writing songs, both on guitar and on beat-making software. I’ve been writing songs since the age of 10. It’s a creative outlet much different than my creative professional job. I’ve always been really into punk rock, but in recent years I have been listening to more rap music. Now I want to drop a mixtape with my own rhymes and beats. I’m always finding new passions through music.

How do you feel it helps or influences your work?

Music has always been therapy for me. Looking forward to playing guitar or making a beat at home helps relieve anxiety while at work. Overall, I feel I have more clarity in my creative process and I’m able to approach creative problems at work differently than someone who doesn’t play music. Design is all about storytelling and music is one of the strongest forms of storytelling. I think it all overlaps.

I’m just at a stage in my life where I feel like I can conquer anything and everything.

Senior Account Manager

What outside activities do you do that inform your work life + abilities?

I wake up between 6-7, nurse, make breakfast, clean up from breakfast, get kids dressed and off to school, pick up kids from school, go to the park, make dinner, clean up from dinner, bathe kids, put PJs on, nurse, put kids to sleep, pack lunches for next day…

How do you feel it helps or influences your work?

I have patience, focus and efficiency when able to work. ;)

What outside activities do you do that inform your work life + abilities?

This year I’ve turned one of my passions, film, into a hobby. In 2016, I’ve written a short film that debuted at the Rose City Comic Con. I’ve also produced a second short film that will premiere next year, started a sketch comedy group (Dad’s House Comedy) that has produced four shorts and made eight, 1-min videos for eROI.

How do you feel it helps or influences your work?

The storytelling aspect of filmmaking is the most beneficial to my day-to-day job. I have a better understanding of seeing things from different vantage points having now worked in various roles on set. I have now been able to translate those skills to client work.

On the technical side, I have become a better photographer, understand light and sound better and have improved my animation skills.

Check back next month for Part 2 of our 6-10 series.
