What outside activities do you do that inform your work life + abilities?

I coach competitive cheerleading in Beaverton Oregon of children ages 12-19 on Oregon’s highest level premier competitive team, Dream. As a mentor meeting them where they are, I can truly break through the noise of their lives and make an impact. See my Dream Team in action.

How do you feel it helps or influences your work?

My work with Taco Bell has been heavily influenced by the audience insights I gather by constantly being around a younger group of athletes, the trends they follow, and the way they communicate. Also working with younger individuals has forced me to always have an open mind and to realize how rapidly the digital world changes: if you don’t adapt, you’ll get left behind.

What outside activities do you do that inform your work life + abilities?

Photography. Mostly digital, some film with toy cameras (like Holga) as well as documentary and street for personal work. Off-camera lighting for commercial work.

And Music. I’m a guitarist, have been playing for over 20 years in many bands of many genres

How do you feel it helps or influences your work?

Each discipline use both sides of the brain. Photography is capturing “that moment” while mathematically thinking of exposure (time), aperture (amount of light), and film speed (how those two react to the film). Music is very expressive and conveys emotion. Being creative and analytical is critical for a digital designer; I need to interpret information and re-create it in an artistic and compelling way, while making sure form is following the function of various browsers and email clients.

What outside activities do you do that inform your work life + abilities?

Bouldering and rock climbing, playing drums, yoga, traveling, and hanging out with Daisy dog. All these things are super fun. Some of them are hard work, and some you can do in an evening, but sometimes you can spend days and weeks doing it…like driving around Iceland in a camper van.

How do you feel it helps or influences your work?

Bouldering and playing drums are both like puzzles I like to work out in my mind, just like creating strategy. Hanging out with Daisy is definitely the most influential, because she’s the cutest and makes me happy.

What outside activities do you do that inform your work life + abilities?

Illustration. My urge to start drawing more regularly soon evolved into doing studies of illustrations from different artists. I am fascinated by their talent and hope to keep getting inspired by their work. Stanley Chow is one of my favorites. Go check out his work!

How do you feel it helps or influences your work?

As a designer, being a good illustrator has its obvious advantages. Strenghtning this skill has helped me step out of my comfort zone: I’ve learned new features of the programs I’ve been using for so long because I used them in a different way. Illustrating on my own time has emboldened me to venture into taking projects at work that I would otherwise not be comfortable taking, such as some of the crew page illustrations, icons, and gifs for our website/blog.

What outside activities do you do that inform your work life + abilities?

I often sit on the sofa with my roommate and his cat and we watch all of the sports (college football, NFL, NBA, MLB, MLS, and European Soccer. When there’s nothing on we play FIFA or NBA 2k17.

How do you feel it helps or influences your work?

Watching sports helps me see well designed things from outside the Greater Portland area. I get to see the billboards and sideline displays from across the country and across the world. I see how local cultures influence design through ticket packaging, court designs etc. It broadens my perspective and awareness of design in the world.

In these crazy times, sometimes you are how you choose to spend your time. Do it wisely!
